The other day Chelsea and I went to check out the new Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre in Sidney with some friends. It had been interesting to see the Centre during its construction phase, but it was even more interesting to visit now that its finished. It’s not a very big place, but they have done a good job with the space they have.
Surprisingly, almost right after we got there a photographer from the Times Colonist came up and wanted to take a picture of Chelsea with the jellyfish. Keep in mind that she’s 16 months old, so it was hard to get her to ‘pose’ for a picture! She just doesn’t get the concept of that yet. The photographer had to take about 20 shots to get a decent one, she was moving so fast! But in the end he did get a good picture of her with the jellyfish, which are an extremely beautiful sight.
Chelsea’s favourite part seemed to be the touch tank at the end. The volunteers lifted up starfish and a sea cucumber out of the water for us all to touch. I eventually realized that Chelsea was dipping her fingers in the salt water and licking it off! Yuck! She must have liked the salty taste. I touched all the marine life but didn’t like touching the sea cucumber. I guess when Chelsea gets older I’ll have to suck it up and pretend like it’s not a big deal!
All in all, it was a really fun visit and since we bought an annual pass we’ll be able to go back again and again. Sidney is such a quaint little town so it’s always nice to have an excuse to return.
